Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! We have been so lucky to have beautiful fall weather and the leaves are turning their brilliant colours. I am a bit surprised, after such a dry summer, I thought maybe the colours wouldn't be as intense. I am so thankful to live in such a beautiful part of the world; there's nothing like a New Brunswick October! I'll have more fall colour photos soon.

I haven't been in blogland much lately as I've been busy getting prepared for Thanksgiving and a house full of family. Laura and family are home for two weeks, Mark and Maggie are home for five days as well, and Ian and Claire are here for two days. When you live in a quiet house with just we two ole farts and two kitties, seven extra people makes quite a difference! Claire at 3 has an abundance of energy... Noah hasn't been sleeping all that well, Laura and Dan both have colds... Yep, it's interesting! But it is so wonderful to have everyone here together. We are very thankful for a wonderful family. We feel very blessed!

Last night we had a yummy turkey dinner with all the fixins... We were so happy that Maggie's mother came from Moncton to join us and how lucky to have her to take a few family photos for us.  I think there's going to be a lot of this going on today..... Zzzzzzz....

Happy Thanksgiving from the Hubbard clan.

Peace,
Linda

Thankful on Thanksgiving

This is Thanksgiving weekend in Canada and I have SO much to be thankful for! I am thankful for the beautiful day we are enjoying - the sun is shining, the leaves are glorious in their autumn colours, the birds and squirrels are feeding in the backyard (keeping Oliver well entertained) and we are smelling the turkey roasting for dinner this evening. Yummm... I am blessed with a wonderful family and I'm so thankful for them every day (even though I don't tell them that often enough!) We'll certainly be missing Laura at the dinner table tonight, but she is cooking her first turkey dinner ever (not without a few phone calls and emails to Mum), and they have invited company for dinner; I'm so thankful for the wonderful young woman she has become, and she loves to cook - bonus!
My blogging has been sporadic lately and for that I apologize to my regular readers, but I've been so busy with other things that blogging has had to take a bit of a backseat. I am thankful to be busy with hobbies that I love, harvesting the garden and preserving, and teaching commitments, because in my mind, being busy is SO much better than being bored with nothing to do. I feel so sorry for people who do not have hobbies, or activities they enjoy.
I am so very grateful for my good health. Other than a cold for the past week, which really is very minor in the grand scheme of things, I have no ailments or complaints. I am not on any meds. If you have your health, you have it made in the shade, as the saying goes.
I am thankful for my many friends. I am so blessed to have so many wonderful friends and I love each and every one. Yesterday we helped friends close up their cottage for the winter (actually it was hubby who worked very hard all day, I didn't do much other than help with supper.)
Then we enjoyed a delicious turkey dinner with all the trimmings and three choices for dessert! (Yes we ARE spoiled...) And yes, most of us chose to sample all three! What a wonderful way to end a beautiful fall day - a fire crackling in the fireplace, sitting around the table sharing food and wine in such good company, discussing books and travel, sharing stories and laughter.. it just doesn't get any better!
Finally I am thankful for the many new friends I have made through blogging! And what's better than having blogging friends? MEETING them! In the past few weeks I have been lucky to meet TWO friends I've made as a result of this blog. A follower who lives in British Columbia contacted me last spring to tell me she had been reading my blog for a while and enjoyed it because she grew up here and it was nice to see photos of "home." She suggested perhaps we could meet while she was home this summer/fall. It turns out we are about the same age and attended the same high school and church; once we met face to face I vaguely remembered her - a quick check in the high school yearbook for her photo confirmed the memory I was questioning. (Yearbooks are such a valuable resource as we get older! lol) It was so nice to meet Cynthia and her family and chat about quilting, photography and other interests. So, waving Hi to you Cynthia! Let's stay in touch!
More recently I met Kathy of Gratitude... Attitude... at Forty-Four Latitude (formerly My Maine Blog). After a failed attempt this summer, we "connected" and enjoyed a tasty lunch together. It was so nice to meet this sweet sweet lady in person and chat about blogging and other common interests. Kathy is a
wonderful photographer and shares so many beautiful photos of  Maine - be sure to visit her blog often and leave her some bloggy love in her comment box! She blew me away with the gift of this wonderful basket which she had put together- full of yummy apples, mini pumpkins, candy, mulling spices and Pumpkin Spice tea, fall potpourri and some wonderful examples of her photography- postcards, bookmarks and her book "Old Barns of Maine." How lucky am I?!! Bloggy friends are THE BEST!!
I have much more in my life that I am thankful for, but that's it for today.. it's time to go check on Mr. Turkey's progress... can you smell him?  No? Well, he sure smells yummy... and he'll soon be in my tummy... Happy Thanksgiving!

Peace
Linda

Scarecrows and Aunt Sallies

Each year in the fall, as they prepare for the harvest, Kings Landing staff make scarecrows and "Aunt Sallies" to protect their crops and gardens. This year I think their efforts were exceptional. Some resemble other staff members and others reflect "events" on site over the season. There were eleven wonderful "creations" displayed around the village, in gardens, trees and by homes. (Visitors over the weekend could vote on their favourites and judging was to take place as well. The winners have now been added below). If you are a frequent visitor to Kings Landing and you are familiar with the staff, I'm sure you'll have no trouble identifying some of these "characters"....
Warning: Photo heavy post!

If you've ever taken a guided tour at KL, this handsome fellow might look strangely familiar... I loved his facial features and his beard and hair. I think there was a very creative and talented Mrs. Hagerman behind this guy...

Did you notice his handsome ears? Dried apple slices...

Next, on to the Joslin farm.... I think this must be Farmer Joslin's wife with their little pet pig. He was the runt of the litter and Mrs. Joslin knit him a sweater to keep him warm on those cool spring days.

On to the Lint house which was frequented by a skunk this summer. Here is Mrs. Lint surprised by her odorous little friend right in her own front yard! Cheeky little devil!!

Mrs. Perley is a kind soul. There is a single gentleman in the village who has not been able to find himself a wife, despite his best efforts. So Mrs. Perley ordered him a "mail order bride". Here she is, ready and waiting to be claimed by her future husband... The sign reads: "From Mail Order Bride Co. Boston, Mass.  To: George"

Over at the Morehouse home, this young fellow was enjoying a swing....  hmmmm.. does he look like a farmhand "taking a break"?   Gotta LOVE those feet...

In the Ingraham orchard  this fellow was checking to see if the apples were ready for picking..

He looks an awful lot like this gentleman who DOES know a lot about apples....

This scarecrow won THIRD PLACE!!

And in the Ingraham garden this Aunt Sally is keeping her eyes peeled  for those pesky blackbirds.

This Aunt Sally won SECOND PLACE!!

At the Heustis house, it seems they were looking ahead to Hallowe'en..."Broomhilda" the witch was staying close to her cauldron... Check out her lengthy  fingernails!!

I loved her facial features, right down to her warty nose...   SO well done...

At the Long house, this Aunt Sally looks like she is ready for a performance!

Speaking of performances, this fellow looks very much like a long-time KL staffer who sees many visitors each year in his shop.... do you recognize him?

You're right - it's Terry the Blacksmith!! Congrats Terry on winning FIRST PLACE!!!

And lastly, outside the Gorman Carpenter Shop, was this lanky fellow. He looks like he needs a good meal or three. I sure hope someone shared their turkey dinner with him- he's looking a little thin...

So, what do you think? Would YOU be able to choose a favourite? It was not easy.. I loved them all...

Kudos to the KL staff for their hard work all season long, and especially for the many efforts that went into this weekend's Thanksgiving Harvest Festival. The Kings Landing site closes today, with the exception of their Hallowe'en and Christmas Dinners at the Kings Head Inn.

Linda

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! It's a lovely day today - so nice to see the sun again after several dreary days. The apple pie is cooling and the turkey is filling my home with it's delicious aroma... yummmm. We will soon sit down to a bountiful table to count our blessings. I am so grateful to have my children home for the weekend and healthy food to put in front of them. We are so very blessed with so much to be thankful for. I feel very fortunate to live where I do in such a beautiful, peaceful country.
Yesterday Laura and I did our annual Thanksgiving visit to Kings Landing. I thought you might enjoy some of the images I took around "the village". Next I'll share some photos of the scarecrows and Aunt Sallies - they were so well done this year.
No need for further chat- just enjoy the beauty. I have to get back to the kitchen and get my veggies prepared....

Peace,
Linda

May the bounty of the season fill your heart and your home.

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving....

T'was the night of Thanksgiving
But I just couldn't sleep.
I tried counting backwards,
I tried counting sheep.

The leftovers beckoned-
The dark meat and white,
But I fought the temptation
With all of my might.

Tossing and turning with anticipation,
The thought of a snack became infatuation.
So I raced to the kitchen, flung open the door
And gazed at the fridge full of goodies galore.
Gobbled up turkey and buttered potatoes,
Pickles and carrots, beans and tomatoes.

I felt myself swelling so plump and so round,
'Til all of a sudden, I rose off the ground.
I crashed through the ceiling, floating into the sky
With a mouthful of pudding and a handful of pie.
But, I managed to yell as I soared past the trees,
Happy Eating to all- pass the cranberries please!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving to all my readers! It's a sunny but cool day here in Fredsville and as I write this the delicious smell of roasting turkey is tantilizing us... Mmmmm, can't wait for turkey dinner, just a few more hours... turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, spiced crabapple jelly, squash, carrots and broccoli, rolls, salad, and warm apple pie and cheddar to top it off.. groan....
On such a perfect day (10-10-10) one can't help but be grateful for the fortunate lives we lead. I am so very thankful for my health, my wonderful family and friends, and the wonderful place in which I live. I am so lucky to live in Fredericton - such a beautiful small city in the Maritimes - I wouldn't trade it for anywhere. Yessiree, I am a proud Maritimer and certainly a proud Canadian.

So, in case you're wondering about today- here's the Thanksgiving Day forecast....

Turkeys will thaw in the morning, then warm in the oven to an afternoon high near 390F. The kitchen will turn hot and humid, and if you bother the cook, be ready for a severe squall or cold shoulder.

During the late afternoon and evening, the cold front of a knife will slice through the turkey, causing an accumulation of one to two inches on plates..
Mashed potatoes will drift across one side while cranberry sauce creates slippery spots on the other. Please pass the gravy.

A weight watch and indigestion warning has been issued for the entire area, with increased stuffiness around the beltway.

During the evening, the turkey will diminish and taper off to leftovers, dropping to a low of 34F in the refrigerator.

Looking ahead to Monday and Tuesday, high pressure to eat sandwiches will be established. Flurries of leftovers can be expected both days with a 50 percent chance of scattered soup late in the day. We expect a warming trend where soup develops. By later next week, eating pressure will be low as the only wish left will be the bone.

Peace,

Linda

God is Good...

Thank God for dirty dishes
They have a tale to tell
While others may go hungry,
We're eating very well.

With home, health and happiness,
I shouldn't want to fuss-
By the stack of evidence,
God's very good to us.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone

Happy Thanksgiving to all my readers! I came across this poem about being thankful, and I think it has a very good message. We are often thankful for all the wonderful things in our lives, but this poem suggests other things we should also be thankful for. I hope you like it. Have a wonderful weekend with family and friends and may the bounty of the season fill your hearts and your home. May your Thanksgiving truly be blessed

Be Thankful

Be thankful that you don't already have everything you desire.
If you did, what would there be to look forward to?
Be thankful when you don't know something
for it gives you the opportunity to learn.
Be thankful for the difficult times.
Its during those times that you grow.
Be thankful for your limitations
because they give you opportunities for improvement.
Be thankful for each new challenge
because it will build your strength and character.
Be thankful for your mistakes.
They will teach you valuable lessons.
Be thankful when you're tired and weary.
It means you've made a difference.
Its easy to be thankful for the good things.
A life of rich fulfillment comes to those
who are also thankful for the setbacks.
Gratitude can turn a negative into a positive.
Find a way to be thankful for your troubles
and they can become your blessings.

Peace,
Linda
