Cheeky Visitor!

Look who's been in my backyard, having an early Christmas feast! This bold squirrel has been having a great time figuring out how to get at my suet block and it looks like he's finally got it. The cheeky little devil kept us entertained for a while with his antics while he contemplated how to shimmy down the wire to get to the cage. Much as I dislike him stealing the bird's food, he is entertaining, and he does have to eat too, after all... I wonder if he has a tummy ache now...?
We have a lot of squirrels around our place. I remember how much my mother enjoyed watching their antics in the trees. She used to quote the verse below to me when I was young - I can still hear her reciting it...

Peace,
Linda

The Squirrel

Whisky frisky,
Hippity hop
Up he goes
To the treetop!

Whirly twirly,
Round and round
Down he scampers
To the ground.

Furly, curly,
What a tail!
Tall as a feather,
Broad as a sail!

Where's his supper?
In the shell,
Snappity, crackity,
Out it fell.

I have to agree with you, they can be quite greedy around the bird feeders, but the entertainment factor far outweighs the nuisance factor. Last weekend we watched for quite some time as a squirrel and a blue jay did battle. The jays kept taunting, and the squirrel kept chasing quite aggressively. What fun! You got some lovely shots!

I have a friend whose father detests squirrels and chipmunks because they get into the bird feed. She said just watching him devise contraptions so that the varmits can't get to the bird seed is hilarious. And to this day he hasn't outsmarted them... ha ha. Lovely pictures and a sweet poem.

Hi Linda, we had two of those, what I would call "squirrel-proof" suet wire containers, last year. The first one the squirrels figured out how to get the goodies and the second one which I had securely wired shut was stolen by the crows.. where there's a will there's a way...

and I wanted to thank you for coming to visit our booth in Fredericton... so kind of you!! I was home holding down the fort and John tended the show by himself.
